Why Buy Seed Packs?
Seed packs are the most efficient and cost-effective way to grow new plants in your backyard or farm. Seeds are often cheaper than young plants or seedlings, and they’re also quicker to germinate. As such, you get more bang for your buck when opting for seed packs. You have the option of planting many seeds and increasing your chances of plants sprouting up later. With the seed packs from Cold Stream Farm, you will receive approximately 100 seeds inside of the packs. You also have the option to order some of the seeds available by the ounce.
How to Buy Seed Packs
With seed packs, you don’t know exactly how the plants will turn out. As a result, it’s important to do your research and to consult Cold Stream Farm before buying your seed packs. Here are just some of the things you should look out for when buying your seed packs:
- Plant Picture
Most seed packs come with a picture of what the plant looks like it once it’s fully matured. This will give you an idea of the types of flowers and colors a particular plant may bring to your backyard, garden, or farm. - Plant Description
In addition to a picture there is usually a written description of the plant, detailing its appearance, height, bloom dates, names, and more. - Planting Directions
Most packs provide detailed instructions how to properly plant your seeds. This will include planting depth, spacing, light exposure, watering, and more. - Uses and Weight
Some plants are better for particular uses than others. If you look closely on the seed pack, you will see the best uses for the seeds, as well as the weight or number of seeds in the pack. - Date
There will be a date stamped on your seed pack. This date tells you the year that it was packaged, giving you an approximate estimate of its age. This is especially helpful when planting seeds as germination rate falls with each subsequent year.
Joe Pye Weed Seed
At Cold Stream Farm, our most popular type of seed pack is the Joe Pye Weed (Eutrochium maculatus). Don’t let the word “weed” in its name scare you. As an herbaceous perennial that can grow up to 7 feet tall, the Joe Pye Weed is a majestic plant that will produce stunning flowers to attract guests of all kinds—humans, animals, and butterflies alike.
Characteristics of the Joe Pye Weed
Named after a Native American herbalist, the Joe Pye Weed was once used as a remedy for fevers but is now a staple in many homes and gardens. Joe Pye Weeds are a large species of wildflower, growing about 3-6″ across and 4-7′ tall. At full bloom, they feature bundles of pink, fragrant flowers that will attract all kinds of wildlife, especially butterflies. These flowers are typically composed of 5 to 8 florets that give off a vanilla-like scent. They typically bloom in late summer, from July to September, after which achenes will grow and scatter in the wind. If they get too tall for your liking they can be easily trimmed in the springtime
How to Grow the Joe Pye Weed
With enough time, care, and dedication, you can have Joe Pye Weeds flourishing in your backyard, garden, or farm. Follow these steps to ensure that they can grow to their full potential:
- When to Plant
The Joe Pye Weed can be planted any time of the year, but for the best results, it is recommended to do so either in the early spring or fall. Give them at least 30 days for cold stratification, and don’t cover them while planting. - Where to Plant
Joe Pye Weeds need moisture to grow, so it’s important to find an area with moist soil in order to plant them. If they are planted in extremely moist conditions, they can handle full sun, but they grow best in partial shade.
Caring for the Joe Pye Weed
Just as with any plant, the Joe Pye Weed needs to be properly cared for throughout its lifespan. Here are a few tips on how to do so:
- Water
Since Joe Pye Weeds like moist conditions, it’s important to keep them well-watered throughout the day, especially when they are first planted or if your area is experiencing a dry spell. If you let the soil stay dry for too long, the Joe Pye Weed could stop growing or their leaves could become scorched and yellowed. As such, be sure to regularly deep-water your Joe Pye Weeds, especially if you live in warmer, drier areas. - Fertilizer
If you plant the Joe Pye Weed in rich soil, you likely won’t need any fertilizer. If, however, the soil is poor, then you should try to supplement it with some fertilizer. Fertilizer or no fertilizer, you should add a layer of mulch alongside your Joe Pye Weeds in order to help maintain moisture. - Trimming
Because the Joe Pye Weed can grow to such heights, many people often wonder what the best way is to trim them. Since they bloom in the summer, the best time to trim them would be late winter and early spring.
