Description

Latin Name: Thuja occidentalis

Common Name: Eastern White Cedar, American arborvitae

Zone: 2-7

Mature Height: Eastern White Cedar is a coniferous tree that typically grows 40 to 60 feet tall, with a narrow, pyramidal shape with a spread of 10-15′. Slow to medium growth rate average 13-24″ per year in ideal conditions.

Soil/ Climate: Eastern White Cedar is found in northeastern North America, particularly in Canada and the northern United States. It thrives in wet, lowland areas, swamps, and along riverbanks. It prefers moist, well-drained soils but can tolerate a range of conditions, including poor, rocky soils.

Notes:  Its bark is thin, fibrous, and light brown to gray. The wood is resistant to decay and moisture, making it ideal for outdoor applications. It’s often used for fence posts, decking, and outdoor furniture. White Cedar has light brown or reddish-brown oblong blunt tip cones that are 3/8 -1/2″ in diameter. Its dense foliage makes it an excellent choice for privacy screens and windbreaks in landscaping. It is recommended to place seedlings three feet apart for a tight hedge.

Problems: Eastern White Cedar is susceptible to pests such as bagworms and spider mites, which can defoliate trees and weaken their health. Heavy infestations can lead to tree decline or death. The tree can also be affected by diseases like cedar-apple rust, which can impact both Eastern White Cedar and nearby apple orchards. This disease cycle can affect local agriculture and ecosystems. In drier conditions, Eastern White Cedar may suffer from water stress, making it more susceptible to pests and diseases.

Wildlife: The dense foliage of Eastern White Cedar offers excellent nesting habitat for various bird species, such as warblers, sparrows, and raptors. The thick cover protects nests from predators and harsh weather. Small mammals, like rabbits and squirrels, use the tree for shelter, while larger animals, such as deer and moose, may find refuge among the trees. The cones serve as a food source.

Cold Stream Farm Supplies White Cedar trees which are grown as bare root seedlings and transplants and sold both wholesale and retail with no minimum order.
