Description

Latin Name: Salix purpurea

Hardiness Zones: 3-8

Common Names: Streamco Willow, Arctic Willow, Basket Willow, Purple Osier Willow Mature Size: This fast-growing shrub can reach heights of up to 10 feet and spread up to 10 feet wide (Ohio State University). It can be pruned to a smaller size, typically recommended to grow between 2 to 5 feet tall (Missouri Botanical Garden). The natural growth habit is round (Ohio State University).

Soil and Climate Requirements: Salix purpurea is highly adaptable to various soil types and environments. It thrives in full sun and moist soil conditions but can also tolerate partial shade. It shows resilience in dry soils, varying pH levels, and poor soil conditions. However, it does not perform well in hot and humid climates. Native to Europe, Japan, central Asia, and North Africa (Ohio State University).

Notes: Pruning is recommended from late winter to mid-summer. The shrub tolerates vigorous pruning up to 6 inches above the ground, quickly regenerating new shoots. While hardy, it is sensitive to autumn transplanting. Protection from winter salt spray during the first winter enhances survival chances (Ohio State University). The leaves are bluish-green on top and silvery bluish-green underneath, mostly maintaining this color through autumn and sometimes turning slightly red. They are narrow with serrated edges, densely alternating on thin stems. In April to May, inconspicuous catkins appear, measuring 1 to 2 inches in length and light green in color. Young shrubs feature slender, purplish-red stems that straighten and arch with maturity. Smooth branches age to a light gray color, with older ones developing slight fissures near the base. Effective for erosion control in both wet and dry soils; stems are suitable for basket weaving (Ohio State University).

Potential Issues: The wood is susceptible to cracking due to its weakness. Common diseases include leaf spots, powdery mildew, blights, and cankers. Insects such as scale, lacebugs, and caterpillars may cause minor cosmetic damage (Ohio State University, Missouri Botanical Garden).
