About Wild Black Cherry Trees
Wild Black Cherry (Prunus serotina) trees are much larger than Choke Cherry trees and usually top out at 50 to 60 feet. They can live for up to 250 years and excel when they’re placed in either rich soil that’s very moist or sandy soil that’s light. Wild Black Cherry trees are hardy and tough, but they also produce white flowers and dark purple fruit that tastes sweet. The fruit is used to make pies, jams, ice creams, and other foods. These trees are not recommended for those with livestock on their land because the leaves from the trees have poisoned animals in the past.
About Sand Cherry Trees
Sand Cherry (Prunus beseyii) trees are the smallest of the cherry trees for sale through Cold Stream Farm. They only grow to be about 4 to 7 feet tall and need full sun to flourish. They’re cold hardy but prefer to be placed into loamy soils. Like their much taller counterparts, Sand Cherry trees produce white flowers as well as purple-black fruit that can be used to make pies, jellies, and more. They’re also often planted to supply wildlife like deer with food and to provide cover for songbirds and game birds.
